The goals of "long-term psychotherapy" are more transformative: 1) individuals gain deeper awareness and understanding of feelings and needs (in both themselves and others); and 2) develop coping skills, tools and strategies to appropriately meet these needs.

A Consumer Reports Survey (1995) found that while most people felt helped by therapy whether brief or long-term, those who stayed in therapy for more than six months reported the most improvement.
